BF4 Assignment: Phantom Prospect and the Elusive Megalodon

ghost1You may have noticed a super-secretive assignment in your list on Battlelog entitled Phantom Prospect. It seems that the name of the assignment may be tied to a book by the same name. From the Rogue Angel series written under the house name of Alex Archer, the book version of Phantom Prospect features shipwrecks and a supposed extinct shark known as the megalodon. Of course the same creature was mentioned in the popular video series by Hank and Jed, Battlefield Friends. These clues have actually led numerous players to go on an all-out megalodon hunt. Because of the references to shipwrecks found in the book, these hunts seem to mostly focus on the map Paracel Storm.

We don’t know yet whether the Phantom Prospect assignment is really related to the elusive giant prehistoric dino-shark, but here’s a quick guide on how to get the assignment started:

NOTE: As stated in the assignment, you must be a Premium member to proceed.

First, go to the Leaderboards on your Battlelog (accessed from your soldier profile). You’ll see a tiny phantom icon near the bottom left of the page. Click it.

You have initialized the Phantom Program! It will ask you for a passcode. Type in bumpinthenight. It will tell you that your unlock phase is completed, and welcome you to the program:

Now, when you return to your assignments and click on the Phantom Prospect (located in the gold assignments), you’ll see that the requirements have been updated and you are ready to begin. You’ll also see the reward, the Phantom Program Dog Tag. By the way, the assignment will actually unlock for your Battlefield 4 soldiers on all platforms.

Let’s hope this assignment leads to a prehistoric beast! Honestly, megalodon hunting seems like the most fun people are having since the game released. Be sure to let us know if you find the creature and how you did it, we may feature your story on BATTLEFIELDO!

Battlefield Player Appreciation: The M1911 Scope

The 3x scope for the M1911 pistol that was promised as part of Battlefield’s Player Appreciation Program has now been made available on PC. Reportedly, it should also be rolling out on the other platforms throughout the day. This gift to the players was originally supposed to be offered yesterday, but was delayed.

Unfortunately for many people, this token of appreciation is rather limited. Although the Battlepack system allows players to receive accessories for yet unlocked weapons, the M1911 must be already unlocked in order to get this particular scope. Those who have achieved this may find the scope by equipping the weapon and customizing. The accessory will be named SCOPE [3x].

To appease players for the rocky launch, Battlefield also extended last weekend’s Double XP event for two days, and will be offering Double XP again this coming weekend. The community has been up in arms about all of the problems that have plagued the game since launch, which have now extended to DLC releases as well.

Of course, the developers are still continually patching the game, so players have yet to experience Battlefield 4 as it was intended to be enjoyed.

Second Assault Assignments

The Second Assault DLC has arrived for Xbox One players, and is on the near horizon for all of the other platforms. With this expansion comes several weapons and other fun unlocks. Below is a quick guide of what you can get–and how to get it!

Five weapons are on the way with the Second Assault expansion pack, and we thought you may be curious about the assignments you’ll have to complete in order to unlock them. All of the weapon assignments are considered Bronze Assignments; they are fairly straight-forward, but be aware that some of them are tied to specific maps. It’s also worth noting that you’ll have to be at least rank 10 before trying for these!

Here they are, the Second Assault weapon assignments:

Assignment: Express Train

Assault Rifle Ribbon x1
Kill Assist Ribbon x2
Get 10 kills inside the Metro

Assignment: Dead Stop

Shotgun Ribbon x1
Raise or lower the Caspian Border Gate

Assignment: Dust Devil

Anti Vehicle Ribbon x1

Assignment: Co-Pilot

Spend 10 minutes in helicopters
Do 10 Squad Repairs

Assignment: Eagle’s Nest

Sniper Rifle Ribbon x1
In a  round, kill 5 players from the Caspian or Firestorm towers

Besides weapons, DICE has made some camos and dogtags available exclusively through the Second Assault expansion pack. The requirements for these range from Bronze to Gold Assignments, and therefore increase in difficulty. One of them even requires you to unlock every gun that comes with the DLC in order to even start trying!

Here are the assignments to unlock these camo patterns and dogtags, along with some shots of the actual rewards. Check them out!

Bronze Assignment

Start 5 fires in Second Assault

Camo_AirMailAIR MAIL

Silver Assignment

Transport a flag carrier in a helicopter which results in a capture

Silver Assignment

Get a kill by using the Firestorm tower burnoff

Silver Assignment

Gold Assignment

If awards are your thing, Second Assault also introduces the opportunity to obtain two new types of ribbons/medals. Both of them are flag related:

Receive 50 Capture the Flag Winner Ribbons

Receive 50 Capture Specialist Ribbons

Which of these weapons, camos or dogtags will you unlock first? Let us know in the comments below!

BF4 Live Stream Shows Second Assault Weapons and Game Play

For those of those who didn’t catch the AMD Fan Day Tournament live stream today, here is a brief run-down on what you missed. The event was broadcast on Battlefield’s official Twitch TV channel, and consisted of three matches played by developers. The action was cast by Alex Mendez, while we were shown three out of the four maps that will be included in this expansion.

As stated, we got to see three maps, and I’m sorry to say that Caspian Border was not one of them. However, we did get to view that map in the BF4 Showdown at the beginning of this month, so perhaps that’s why the remaining maps were chosen.

Operation Metro 2014

This is the first map that was showcased, with a round of Capture the Flag. The tunnels are flooded, and the destruction has been amped up quite a bit. The ceilings are especially vulnerable, and can be brought crumbling to the ground (or upon your enemies) by shooting above or destroying support beams. The now operational elevators will provide a new way to get upstairs, or at least cause a distraction to help your team push to the top of those escalators. In certain game modes, there are extra side routes on this map. Outside, the long grass can be set on fire, and it was mentioned in the stream that this cannot be extinguished. That should create an interesting twist in game play–either create a flammable damage-inducing barrier, or burn up that pesky sniper hiding in the field!

Also mentioned was the fact that the Obliteration mode on this map is played outside in the park area, instead of in the tunnels. So, unlike in Rush, we’ll get the experience of pushing the objective in either direction.

Gulf of Oman 2014

Obliteration on Oman was featured next in the stream. A sandstorm hovers ominously on the edge of the horizon as soon as the round begins. That is the biggest change on this fan-favorite map, and it really affects game play! The storm slowly creeps in and hits during the match, drastically reducing visibility on both land and in the air. A giant crane falls due to the storm’s intensity (reportedly it cannot be triggered by player actions). We’re told that the duration of the sandstorm is around 8 minutes. Afterwards, things calm back down and game play resumes in the aftermath.

Operation Firestorm 2014

Last, and maybe least, comes Operation Firestorm with another round of Obliteration. Don’t get me wrong, Firestorm is an okay map, I’m just not sure I’d peg it as a “fan-favorite”. However, Obliteration and Capture the Flag may bring enough of a change to the dynamics to change my opinion. The main Levolution on this map seems to be the fires caused by various means of destruction. Tanks can be blown-up, pipes can be shot, and oil fires can be set aflame to create fire hazards and create visual obstruction from the hoards of snipers that usually inhabit this map.

By watching the stream, we’ve composed a list of the five weapons that are likely making their way back onto the Battlefield with this DLC. And here they are:

GOL (Sniper)

At the end of the stream, we were also treated to the debut of the Battlefield 4: Official Second Assault Trailer. View it below!

Which of these maps are you looking forward to playing the most? What about the incoming Second Assault weapons, any favorites? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Battlefield 4 Updates Continue

Efforts to improve the Battlefield 4 experience continue. Several more game updates are reportedly in the works. We have word on issues being identified and fixes rolling out for the following platforms:

There have been numerous reports of crashing on this system, and the DICE team is still exploring the problem. They are hoping to release a game update for the PS4 early next week. More details are yet to come.

Xbox 360:

The game update for the Xbox is going through final testing at the moment. As soon as this update passes the testing stage, we’ll be given more information on its release.

A new update will be coming for PC as well to fix various remaining problems. However, no word has been released as to the specific contents of this update. We are promised a “rough timing estimate at a later date.”

Please stay tuned, we’ll bring you more information on the fixes for these platforms as soon as it’s released!

Battlefield 4 – Naval Strike Teaser

Eager to catch a glimpse at what Battlefield 4′s third DLC installment, Naval Strike, might be all about?

DICE has released this teaser image to the masses, egging on our peaked interest in the third of five scheduled DLCs prepping to be released for Battlefield 4. While it is obvious that Naval Strike will project more of a focus on naval combat, there have also been reports that Titan mode, which has players boarding enemy teams’ ships with the objective of destroying them, might return with Naval Strike’s release.

Naval Strike will feature 4 new open water maps, most likely set in the China Sea, with a focus on naval warfare and will be available to Premium members. Those without a Premium purchase can acquire the Battlefield 4 DLCs for $15.00 each, and will all be available on all platforms.

Battlefield 4′s Naval Strike will most likely be released in the summer of 2014. What are your thoughts on Naval Strike? Would the reemergence of Titan mode be an appropriate addition to this DLC?

Unlock Weapons and Gadgets with China Rising Assignments

Yesterday, we told you about the weapons and gadgets that were on their way with the upcoming China Rising expansion. Wondering how to get your hands on them? Never fear! In true Battlefield fashion, these new toys will be unlockable by completing assignments (they couldn’t just let us have them for free, right)? Luckily, Battlefield assignments involve shooting stuff and blowing things up. Perfect.

Here is the list of weapons and gadgets, and their respective assignments:

As we know, five weapons will be available with this DLC, and each one has it’s own unique set of requirements in order to obtain. If you’re in the market for these, here’s how to get them:

Assignment: Open Fire

Assault ribbon x3
Get a kill with a pistol in a round
Get a kill with 40mm grenade in a round
Get a kill with the defibrillator in a round

Assignment: Need Only One

Sniper ribbon x3
Get a kill with a shotgun in a round
Get a kill with a DMR in a round
Get a kill with C4 in a round

Assignment: Multitalented

Get a kill with an AR
Get a kill with a LMG
Get a kill with a Sniper Rifle
Get a kill with a grenade

Assignment: Powder Keg

LMG ribbon 3x
Get a kill with the M224 Mortar

Assignment: Make A Dent

Destroy an air vehicle with portable AA
Anti Vehicle Ribbon x3

Two really cool gadgets make their way onto the Battlefield, and–with the information we have so far–they don’t seem quite as easy to get as the weapons above. I, for one, am not much of a pilot–I’m a boots on the ground kind of girl…but maybe some of you will enjoy this kind of thing. Here are the assignment details for obtaining these new-to-the-series gadgets:

Assignment: Safe Raiding

Get a kill with the bombing raid

Assignment: Eyes in the Sky

Air Superiority Ribbon x1
Jet Fighter Ribbon x3

Apparently, for those of you who just love the glory of achieving there is an extra assignment just for you. There is no word on any reward for completing this yet. Of course, that could change, and if we get any information to that effect we’ll let you know!

Additional Assignment: Middle King

10 Hours China Rising
5 Kill streak
1 Kill with SUAV
