BF3 Map List Found in Beta Files

Morgan of BF3Online snooped around in the Battlelog and BF3 Beta game files and discovered some interesting bits of information: a list of all of the maps in Battlefield 3.  The maps have generic names (for example, Operation Metro is MP_SUBWAY, while Caspian Border is MP_FOREST) but nevertheless this is largely new information!  Following are lists of all the maps in BF3 according to BF3Online‘s findings:

Multiplayer Maps

  • MP_BAZAAR
  • MP_HIGHWAY
  • MP_FOREST (Caspian Border)
  • MP_PARIS
  • MP_OILFIELDS
  • MP_BASEJUMP
  • MP_SUBWAY (Operation Metro)
  • MP_CANALS
  • MP_KHARG
  • MP_OMAHA
  • MP_TUTORIAL

Singleplayer Maps

  • COOP_ROLLINGTHUNDER
  • COOP_BEHINDENEMYLINES
  • COOP_SUPERCOBRA
  • COOP_EXTRACTION
  • COOP_ASSASSINATION

Also discovered were a list of weapons exclusive to the Back to Karkand expansion pack:

  • XP1_FAMAS
  • XP1_HK53
  • XP1_PP19
  • XP1_QBZ95B
  • XP1_L85A2
  • XP1_QBB95
  • XP1_MG36
  • XP1_JACKHAMMER
  • XP1_TYPE88
  • XP1_L96

Remember, this stuff isn’t official, it’s from the game files, so there might be changes (MP_TUTORIAL might be a test map for example that we won’t see in the final release… but it could also be a sandbox / tutorial map where players can practice flying, driving, etc).  Thanks BF3Online for the great find.

Frostbite 2.0 seminar with K. Magnusson

Kenny Magnusson is a developer for Battlefield 3, and he just recently held a seminar in Germany about the amazing technology that empowers Battlefield 3 – Frostbite 2.0.

During the 55 minute long conference, he talks about the technologies behind Bad Company and Mirrors Edge, and what kind of new features and technology Digital Illusions wanted for their newer titles, such as dynamic lightning and extensive destructable environments. He then describes how they managed to create the state-of-the-art game engine as well as the multiple problems the Swedish studio has run into during its development.

Fake BF3 System Requirements Circulating

The rumors have been flying today.  A number of gaming news sites have been posting false information that the Battlefield 3 system requirements have been leaked by GameStop.  This is completely FALSE – DICE has not commented officially on system requirements yet.  Earlier today the GameStop BF3 product page included a set of minimum and [...]

As evidenced by this tweet from a few days ago, DICE has officially hired web developer Elton Muuga (known online as Elxx) to their team.  Muuga is best known in the Battlefield community as the creator of the popular Battlefield 2 Sandbox modification, which turns BF2 into a sandbox playground akin to Garry’s Mod for [...]

Our Take on the 30 FPS / 720p on Consoles Debate

The latest information that has come to light about the disparity between the PC and console versions (PS3, Xbox 360) of Battlefield 3 with respect to graphics has stirred quite a bit of discussion and in some cases misguided anger across the internet.  DICE graphics programmer Johan “repi” Andersson recently revealed on his Twitter that [...]

Back to Karkand Details!

As we heard through Twitter yesterday, DICE have released some details on the Back to Karkand DLC for Battlefield 3. So far we have one mind blowing concept art piece, a wallpaper and a interview with lead Back to Karkand developer, Niklas Fegraeus.

What does the Frostbite 2 engine and the Battlefield 3 gameplay bring to the reimagined version of Strike at Karkand?
– From a gameplay perspective, destruction is the biggest addition compared to the original map in Battlefield 2 back in 2005. I remember this particular building by the square in the original where players could defend very effectively. Now, with the destructive power of Frostbite 2, someone can just RPG that building and expose the defenders within. At the same time, we need to be careful not to add destruction that breaks the tried and tested game flow of the map.

You were also Lead Designer on last year’s expansion pack Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam. Do you see any similarities between that and Back to Karkand?

– Certainly from the perspective of scope and ambition, they are very similar. This is no simple map pack. Back to Karkand will also include iconic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles to bring back to the base game, new unlocks and persistence, and more content that we will talk about later. They are also similar in that they are both strongly themed.

In your mind, what makes Strike at Karkand still great?

– Strike at Karkand finds the perfect combination of tight urban infantry combat and traditional Battlefield vehicle combat, without any one side ever dominating the fight. I also think that the linear flag positions give you a clear idea of where you need to go, creating a strong sense of direction.

The article goes on to feature an interview with the original designer of Strike at Karkand for BF2, David Spinnier, who is also the lead co-op designer for Battlefield 3, and includes goodies like the original design layout for Strike at Karkand. READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE!
